Default What are these and do they require cleaning?

What is this black box that hang off the hose that leads to the intake (throttle body)? Is it supposed to be remove and cleaned periodically?

What is this metal piece inside of the air box where the air filter is? Does it need to be cleaned with some spray cleaner?

Lastly, what is this cylinder looking thing? There is one on each side of the top of the engine. I tried to remove one because I have a feeling that it needs to be cleaned but when I removed the one screw that holds it in place, all it did was turn a quarter turn and then the metal piece that the screw goes through prevented it from turning any further. Do you have to remove the valve cover to get this off? And does it need periodic cleaning?

Thanks.

I figured out what the one it is. The silver cylindrical item is a camshaft solenoid adjuster. My guess is that the valve cover has to be removed to remove it. But I don't think it requires cleaning. I'm guessing...............

Or it could be the Variable Timing Solenoid Pressure Valve? No idea.....

short answer is no to all 3 questions..
first is just a sound resonator thingy kind of i recall..
second..hmm...don't remember now...(can look it up later)
third is cam adjuster solenoids...don't need cleaning unless they are stuck.. edit: valve cover does not need to be removed to remove them...just unscrew bolt and pull up/out them
cheers/H

Yes, the first thing is a resonator. Apparently that's the thing that robbing you of supercharge whine. I think covering it or the hole that leads to that chamber will reintroduce the sound. I might try it.

Thanks for the feedback. Hmmm, it appeared that they were threaded. However, I did not pull up on them very hard. But if I am not having any issues I will leave them alone. I just thought they may be something that could collect carbon buildup and may need cleaning.

cal3thousand, but I don't have a supercharger........

I'm a little lost at what you are saying. Are you saying that my car could sound like I have a supercharger (even though I don't have one) if I cover the hole inside the tube that opens to that resonator?

Thanks.

hrc4u,
Did you remember what the other thing is (inside the air filter cabin) and do I need to do any maintenance on it? Thanks.

the thing in filter housing seems to be an "intake air switch over valve" ...the official manual says nothing in maintenance section about cleaning that one (neither have i ever cleaned that)
the Audi training manuals says this about it:
'"If the engine requires a large amount of air, the
engine control unit (active opening) activates the
solenoid valve N335 and a vacuum modulator opens
the wheel housing inlet.
The passive opening of the wheel housing inlet is
activated if an excessively high vacuum is created in
the air filter housing (e.g. obstruction of the intake
opening at the front of the vehicle). The increased
vacuum forces the flap of the wheel housing inlet
open.
The raw-air intake system is fitted with an additional
intake pipe from the wheel housing with flow-optimised
cross-sections."

cheers/H
