Default Brake light!

Well this sure did freak me out while I was on the interstate!

Dealer wants to charge me $900 - $2700 depending on whether all or just one set need to be replaced.

I have been watching YT videos and feels like something I could do myself, although I am by no means handy. Would love some general feedback / tips / suggestions if you guys have them!

What the dealer didn't tell you is the labor is the cheap part of this repair.

To do all the brake pads is a relatively easy DIY job on these cars, but you will need VCDS or similar program to put the rear electronic parking brake into service mode!!

Thanks for the tip, good to go on the VCDS! Wondering if I should also be replacing the rotors... She only has 49k miles so not exactly road-hard. Any vendors / brands for the parts that I should prioritize or avoid?

Brake light as in tail light or the brake light on the dash that says time to change brake pads?

If it’s the brake pads then yeah it will cost a bit for a shop to do the work. A full set front and back pads and rotors are $600 from FCP. Chances are strong that you need rotors as well.

If you have to change the rotors then you really should put the car on jackstands to do it safely since you have to partially get under the car.

If you don’t have the tools already then you are going to spend a few hundred to get the basics you will need then you need the space to store them. Then another $200 for VCDS to release the rear brakes. It’s handy for many other things as well. OBD11 is supposed to be good as well.

You admitted to not exactly being handy so I am not sure I would tackle this job off a YouTube video.

There is nothing that says you have to go to the dealer for brakes. Find a local indie shop you trust and have them do it. I am betting the bill will be half of the dealer
