Default '01 Audi S8 trans issues

New member here:

I have an '01 S8 with 84K miles on the clock. Dealer replaced the trans at 40K under warranty back in March of '05 after it would not shift into reverse.

Now with 84K miles the car would bind on deceleration. After bringing it to a reputable local independent shop he tells me the transmission needs replacing. Trans fluid was all burnt and looked horrible. He told me this before knowing that it had already been replaced once before.

It is my wife's car, she drives it mainly to take the kids to school, shopping, etc. No track days with it, no neutral drops.

So the independent shop says, to have the trans rebuilt $4500, a remanufactured trans from the factory would be $5500.

So, I have a car worth roughly $10,000 that is going to need it's 3rd trans at a cost of around $6000??

Anyone have any suggestions or opinions?? Any idea if it would even be worth trying to find one from a salvage yard?

Thanks,
Peter

Where are you located? There might be rebuild options not too far away.

A later or upgraded trans from a wrecker is not a terrible idea but it'd be unclear what you are getting.

If your car can be driven you might be able to sell it as-is also. Someone might want the project, or an S8 with a trans just rebuilt bu a tech they trust. I would happily buy an S8 that needed a trans if I knew it was going to be fixed right and then serve me well for a number of years.

Thanks for the reply. I am located in the Chicago area.

I have been searching the internet for alternatives and there is fairly priced rebuild option out of Georgia. I just got a quote from them for $2200 + shipping. At this price it is actually worth keeping and driving.

I am wondering if anyone is familiar with this shop? They offer a full 1 year warranty. I am pretty active on the Porsche bulletin boards and there is a motor builder who is well advertised with reasonable prices, but, has a horrible reputation. Warranty or not, installing and uninstalling a trans a couple of times will negate any cost savings.

I can rebuild it for you for less or you can buy my spare S8 transmission. I converted my S8 to manual and the auto tranny has to go. Email me for details at tozoa8 at yahoo dot com
