1/4 inch left on front pads and the warning light is still not on? Can someone turn off the warning
light using vag or something? I still see the sensor cable on the pad.

Wear limit according to Bentley: 7mm including backing plate
So, if your quarter inch doesn't include the backing plate, it sounds like there's no problem.
The wear sensor is a pretty failsafe design -- the warning light comes on when the sensing wire is cut (or when its plug corrodes), not when the sensing wire grounds out against the disk, as was the case on earlier pad wear warning lights.

On Audi's where the pad worn light was an "option", such as an A4 ...
... you can use Vag-Com to disable the light. Unfortunately, the pad worn idiot light is standard on the A8 and can't be disabled without physically shorting out the wires :-(

How do you check if the warning light system is working beside unplugging the sensor and short the
terminal. Yes 1/4 inch without the back plate. I think I'm OK, but it does look pretty thin compared to the thickness of a brand new one waiting to be replaced.
Thanks all,
Thanks all,

Unplug the sensor and DON'T short the terminals.
Again, the wear sensor triggers the light by cutting the wire. So, unplugged = light on, shorted = light off.
The wiring diagram shows the four sensor wires in series, one end connected to ground and the other to the instrument cluster. So it can not turn on the light by grounding the wire to the disk -- the wire is already grounded.
You can probably reach around the tire with the car on the ground and unplug the sensor by feel.
