1998 A8 with transmission problems. Help!

Eeek. Not sure I'd trust them to do it right.
Ask some of the independant shops you would trust to work on the car who they would use. I, along with a guy I work with, have had good luck with Triangle Imports on Capital Blvd. Might give them a call and see what they suggest.

Re: Raleigh
I'm in Cary, 97 A8Q...I've got the same hunting/dropout too. I started with the dropout at 80K, I changed the fluid/filter at 88K, but it didn't help. Have you thought about West German Garage? They are at the intersection of Western Blvd and Hillsborough St. They've been there for about 20 years. The owner is from Germany I believe, though I haven't asked him about the transmission. Let me know how your situation goes.

Re: Raleigh
I am now trying to find out what type of tranny mine is. Apparently they come in 3 types: DSM, DPZ, and DTE. I am planning to order a remanufactured one (best price I found is $2500) and swap mine. Labor will be around 11hrs at $50/hr. I am getting conflicting directions. Some people say it doesn't matter what tranny I get - just as long as it's 4.2 quattro-; other folks are telling me -don't even think about not gettting the same exact tranny you got now (same code)...

Newer is better because of the valve body. Otherwise they are same.
I put an 02' tranny in my 97'. Everything bolts right up except the F125 switch. The switch is same, but the plug is different.
My 97' was DSM and the 02' is FUN.

Thank you so much for your help! Is the switch on the tranny itself or at the interface between engine and tranny? Also, how did you get it to work with the different plug? Did you use the plug from the old tranny? Are there the same # of wires between the 97 and 02? I found a good price for a 2000 one. Do you think a 2000 tranny would work fine with my 98? BTW: I like the picture you have attached. That pretty much sums it up, doesn't it?

Re: I've used my old switch, it bolts right up.
Today I found out my tranny is DTE type. Is that good or bad? I found a couple cheaper trannies too, but it turned out that they were both broken... Any ideas where I can get this done on the cheap?
