1999 A8, kills randomly upon stopping
Looking for help w/ a 99’ A8 4.2... Car will die randomly when coming to a stop at stop signs, otherwise runs fine. Doesn’t do it all the time. Car has done this for a long time & you can imagine the unsafe scenarios that are possible w/ this out on the open road. Looking for suggestions as we’re not sure what to do. |
Does it stop dead? Or stumble and die out slowly? Does keeping some gas pedal on help?
Maybe a throttle adaptation would help. Or maybe the wiring to the crank sensor is fraying. How are the motor mounts? |
Stumble & dies out *somewhat* slowly would be accurate. That’s what we do is keep our foot on the gas to keep it running when we feel it about to die. Not sure about motor mounts. Strange thing is how it does it sometimes & other times totally fine like it has a mind of it’s own. |
I'd clean the MAF and throttle body, do a throttle adaptation. If that does not help there is a TPS which could be replaced.

A little more detail and history please. Do the dash lights die? Mileage on the car? Any codes? How long have you had the car? When was the fuel pump ever changed?
|
Dash lights kind of die off as it shuts down. not sure on codes, car has is around 177,000 miles, 2nd owner have had it probably close to 15 years has done it for a long time. Not sure on fuel pump but I believe that was suggested when I was looking into it quite awhile ago. |
