Default 1st Gear question

2000 A8L.. Question is: Whenever I shift into tiptronic, my car does not stay in 1st gear. I had the thread my way down an icy hill this morning with people in ditches and milling about all over it. I put it into 1st and was idling down the hill with no problem, foot off of the throttle. Then it shifted into 2nd and started to go faster than was safe, the second I even feathered the brakes it started to slip, so basically had to go down the hill much faster than I wanted..I have noticed if I leave normally in tip, it automatically shifts into 2nd about 1200rpm.. Is there a way or switch I don't know about to keep it in 1st until I tell it to shift.. Thanks..

Default You need to recode the TCU to sport mode, see audipages

Default Buy my 2002 A8 TCU and also get S mode aka "Squirt" mode

Search "ess8" for recent info. $150 shipped to the lower 48.

Default If you have not recoded the trans,I would start there....

My 2000 did the same thing, after recoding it in March of 2007 it has slowly learned/adapted to my driving style and when in tip mode it will hold first to a higher rpm/speed then it ever did.

It will especially hold first under full throttle to a higher rpm, but not to redline like an S8 or a newer car that has sport mode.

If you do not mind shifting the trans yourself one of the recodes for the trans will let it hold all gears to redline - but you HAVE TO SHIFT IT!

Will this TCU work on a 99 A8 or does it have to be a facelift 40V?

Default Re: Facelift A8 only...

Thanks guys.. recoded the trans and works like a charm. Only tried to hold 1st up to 4000 rpm until I shifted. After the weather gets better I will program to all out sport mode. Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

Default Is there any way to recode to "Sport Plus" mode?

"Sport Plus" is a name I just invented, it works like this:

1) Holds all gears to rev limiter in Tiptronic mode, does not upshift at all.
2) Downshift will only occur at revs below 1000 rpm with no throttle (decelerating). No kickdown downshift.

This is how my '97 A8 Sport and pre-facelift S8's was. This is how the tiptronic mode should be in my opinion. I miss it badly.
