Default 2001 S8 Transmission Diagnosis by Audi dealership

HELP! Need some insight into this diagnosis by the ‘stealer ship’.

I have had some minor, intermittent 'jerks' while putting the car in reverse in an incline.

No issues, no hunting in drive, fairly smooth up and down shifting using tiptronic.

Trying to be cautious, took the car in for a look at ‘stealer ship’, and they are telling me I 'might' be low on ATF and the problem might be that the previous independent mechanic who did the ATF flush, including filter and gasket change / service, might have left off a part from the bottom pan (see diag. page 1 - part 4A).

Of course, being ‘stealer ship’, they will not / cannot get me that part, but have to order the whole pan (#4) which seems illogical and expensive to me.

I am happy to get the bits and pieces around the seals, gaskets and even a new filter and do a transmission fluid flush again, the car is at 100,913 kilometers = 62,704.4311 miles. I think this is pretty low for its year (2001) and would like to be extra diligent about keeping it in good shape.

Please, any recommendations / insight?

BTW, after reviewing the forum, I did ask the mechanic to look at the F125 switch, no issues. Did a self test (putting the car in cruise, reversing to see if mirror tilts down) and passed.

A new transmission or, re-build is not a likely option, unless TozoM8 want to fly out from Chicago to Hong Kong for a week ;-)?

BTW, when I did the ATF flush 2 years ago on the same car, in abundance of precaution, I did cut the filter down tube by 1/2" and I think the Audi mechanic is noting that on the diag. (page 1 - #28, #29).

What to do? Wife is about to shoot me for continuing to tinker with this 12 year old car now, which is otherwise fantastic!

Appreciate your thoughts.

Cheers and Happy New Year

I don't believe that part serves much purpose (that I can figure). It wasn't there on my trans pan when I changed the atf/filter...and I'm the only one ever in there.

Notice it's not present here either >>>

Did they replace all that?! If so, why? Did you drive the car over jagged boulders or something?

Sump, differential cover, flange shaft, etc...??

No but that's what they are suggesting, I can't imagine I need all that! Hence my apprehension.

The car is my weekend and occasional weekday drive, can't imagine a little low ATF level could necessitate such extensive replacements....'stealership'

I had the local Aamco transmission do a filter change, new gasket, and had them cut the filter pick up point by 1/2".

I worked it out so the car was up on the lift for the weekend, so it had a chance to really drain out while the pan was off, and then they got the wrong gasket/filter, so it was up another 3 days with no pan, still dripping when the right filter/gasket came in.

I went with their "house" full synthetic fluid, and after some quick research, found it was a very high quality fluid, and cheaper than the "Audi/VW" recommended fluid.

It's been flawless since the change, but it was in great shape to start with, as it appears the pan and filter were pretty new, and of course so was the fluid. (Very little metal on the magnets in the pan, no sludge, and the fluid was clean.)

My 2001 S8 is a prior total loss, and clearly, both the engine and transmission oil pans are new, and were damaged in the loss that totaled the car. (There are signs of severe scrapes on the subframe around the pans, and the frame and crush zones are repaired, or replaced up front. (The two tubes are new, and on the left side, it's repaired at the tube mounts.)

Anyway, I'd look around, and find a mechanic who can work on Audi's, and get them to check the fluid levels, or do it yourself. (Will need a VAG Comm to do this, so you get the right fluid temps, and you need a flat/level place to check the oil.)

The dealer wanted 500.00, Aamco did it for under 220.00.

Easy choice there.

One more thing.

Are you setting the parking brake before you put the transmission into park?

I've found on mine, if I'm on a hill, and I put it into park, it holds the car just fine, but it's hard at times to get out of park and back into reverse, or drive, and will thunk or make noise.

This is normal I think, as the parking pawl is engaged, and holds the transmission locked in place while you are in "P" and then is moved out of place when you go from "P" into reverse and then into any of the drive options.

Try this: Stop, and keep your foot on the brake. PULL UP on the hand brake all the way, fixing the car in place. THEN move from drive to park.

Lock up, and do whatever you want, but before you release the hand brake/parking brake, start the car first, and put it into Drive or Reverse depending on where you want to go. THEN release the hand brake, and see if the clunk is gone. (My guess is, it will be gone if you use the hand brake, but any noise is from the transmisison being locked into place with the weight of the car against the parking pawl, and it's creating noise when you disengage the parking pawl.

You don't have that part in the S8. That diagram is for the ZF 5HP19 not the 5HP24A.

Thank you for that confirmation...I am arguing now with the dealership; that is claiming it as "missing" and wants to charge me for a whole replacement transmission pan.

Totally ridicules!

BTW, just got in touch with ZF here in China / Hong Kong, they are offering to locate the following re-built transmission for my S8:

5 HP 24 A
ZF parts list no.: 1058 020 030

Will see what they come back with in terms of price, worth having that option in back pocket, if the price is right, with ZF warranty. I think my bolt on mechanic can handle the install.
