Amazing work and well documented, thanks. Mine have just been hit with the same problem and I've found a company with experience who will do it for me with 2yrs warranty.
Its a bit expensive though and digging into the details beyond what's described here he also wants to replace all the valves and get a new torque converter.

Anyone have a view if this is a good idea or should I argue against it?

I've not asked about the difference in cost but given the info on here it might be up to around $1000 less. He will probably void his general warranty if I make him exclude the valves and torque converter.

Wow 240,000 miles on an original non-serviced D2 transmission! Very impressive and well done to you and the previous owners of that D2.

I'm hoping for the same longevity on my transmission.

I had 185k on my 2000 A6 4.2 trans when I traded the car in last January. It worked perfectly. I did the oil and filter every 40k.

The shop currently rebuilding mine is also replacing all wear materials and getting the torque converter rebuilt (rebuilding them is usually the norm vs brand new I think). He also said something about replacing some (I don't think all) the valves with some updated after market components. I also feel I'm paying more than it could be, but it seems worth while for increased peace of mind. My shop is only providing an 18 month, 18 thousand mile warrantee, so it looks like you are a bit better with a 2 year warrantee. How many miles are they offering on that warrantee?

From everything I've read on this forum and others, I think I've been very lucky (well not as lucky as the previous owners that didn't take the financial hit of a rebuild). How many miles do you have so far on your D2?

I just hit 100,000 miles two weeks ago.

Reverse just failed on my S8 at 155k.

I have not asked about the milage yet, 18k miles don't seem that much and I would rather have them commit to 2 yrs without a mileage limitation, I will ask though and post back.
My mechanic says the valves are made out of aluminum and get pretty worn at 190K miles.

Do it right (replace everything) the first time. Then it's done and you can forget about it and enjoy the car : )

Wow yeah l can see all the rollers. I remember that the race was also worn really bad and when l pried it out it was razor thin. Much thinner than the new one. I'm amazed w/ the amount of fluid in there you'd still get that much wear. My clutch packs looked new.
