Default 2002 S8 Transmission Clunk in 1st Gear -- ???

Yesterday the transmission on my 2002 S8 at 78K miles started clunking before engaging in 1st gear. This happens whenever drive is engaged from a stopped position. Easing down the gas pedal very gradually in 1st gear seems to help.

No other symptoms, all other gears shift smoothly. Since it is the weekend do not have access to VagCom, it's just you guys!

Past discussions seem to indicate first step is to have a qualified foreign mechanic change the trans fluid and filter (snipping 1/2" off the filter tube). 8 qt of Mobil 1 Mercon V was recommended by TozoM8.

Am I on the right track, here?

Definitely start with a fluid and filter change! As for fluid I would use what Audi recommends. If the mobil fluid meets audi's certifications than I don't see why you couldn't use it.

But maybe, since you feel there's an issue already, you may want to check the fluid level FIRST (not simple, I know...no dip stick). But if it's significantly low, enough to cause an issue, you need to locate the leak, if any. These trans's do not lose fluid on their own...either a leak (even at the cooler or connections) or refilled incorrectly previously.

I know this may sound silly, but mine did this. Usually when it was cold outside but if I pressed heavily on the break pedal and then slowly shifted from park to drive, it wouldnt do it.
