Default 2004 Audi A8 4.2

How much horsepower and torque is the four cam, 40V 4.2L V8 going to have on the redesgned A8? Some sources say 310 and 302 ft./lbs. like the current A8, but I seriously doubt those sources are right. Is there anyone on this board who knows about this as well as an all new tiptronic six speed automatic?

I'm speculating that the next A8 will use a range of V6, V8 and W12 direct injection(FSI) petrol engines. I think the V8 will be based on the "short" block version just introduced in the Allroad(cam belt moved to rear chain, 2 x electric fans). I understand that FSI prohibits the use of 5 valves per cyl, so expect the V8 to be a 32v. As FSI is supposed to add around 15% power, I would guess at the following engines - 3.0L V6 @ 250BHP, 3.7L V8 @ 300BHP, 4.2L V8 @ 345BHP, 6.0 W12 @ 480BHP and 4.2L V8 Biturbo @ 520BHP. I would guess that all these engines will use the new ZF 6 speed auto(6-HP-26), which is already in the new BMW 7 and Jag S type, but Audi have previously denied this, so we might be seeing a CVT based system.

Default Engines to expect in new A8

Some of the engines you can expect to see on the new A8 are a reworked and re-tuned 3.0 liter V6, a 4.2 liter V8, and a 6.0 liter W12, the choice of the truly power-hungry automobile enthusiast. Some diesel engines to hit the European market will be the 2.5 liter V6 and 4.0 liter V8, with the 5.0 liter V10 turbo diesel from the Volkswagen Phaeton rumored to make its way over as well.

A twin turbocharged 4.2 liter V8 now under development by Audi-owned Cosworth Technology said to put out up to 430bhp and 443lb ft of torque! This will most likely find its way into an all new S8 sometime in late 2003, early 2004. A new six speed automatic will be standard on V8 models and above, with CVT on the lower-end models. The more powerful engines will also get (a renewed) quattro standard to help put down power, while the others will remain front wheel drive.

Also present will be a specially designed air suspension. This highly advanced suspension is similar to that found on the Audi allroad. It consists of continuously variable dampers, which can alter the ride height of the vehicle. The system drops the car down at higher speeds to improve aerodynamics and reduce fuel consumption.

The W12 can kick out 600BHP as in V-dubs concept/super cars of various guises (Bugati etc.)

Doubt we'll ever see it in this form in an A8, you need the de-tuning bla bla.

Will ZF six speed auto on the V8 and W12 A8s be tiptronic with sport mode? I sure hope so

Default 310 hp and 302 lb-ft is not gonna cut it ....

The new 745i and MB S500, not to mention the LS430 and Q45, boast much higher torque figures. I sincerely hope that with an all-new design, Audi will not forget the engine department. By several accounts, the new A8 will gain some 150 lbs to provide more passenger space and chassis rigidity. It would seem like it would need at least 20-30 hp just to maintain its current performance.

Default true, though ...

to be honest the new 7 is so ugly and (from reports) the idrive is so irritating to operate that it's rendered itself irrelevant. the main competition for the new a8 is gonna be the s500/s600.

Agree with most of your views, but don't you think they will use the all new 3,2 V6 as the entry level engine instead of the "old" 3,0?

They new 3,2 (FSI, is it?) is the new high-end Audi TT and Golf alternative, makes sense to use it in other cars as well. The 3,0 is an old design, just a larger version of the more than 10 years old 2,8. My guess is that current A6 is the last one to get the 3,0.

Regarding the V8 biturbo, I'm not so sure anymore. There has been many signals around that Audi is dropping turbo charged petrol engines alltogether in favour of larger displacement engines. New S4 supposed to get 4,2 V8, new S6 rumoured to get 5,0 V10. New A8 will for sure get the 6,0 W12. So a smaller biturbo in the new S8 kind of sounds wrong, don't you think? A V10 or even more likely some kind of V12 will fit this picture better I think.

To be honest, I'm not sure what it's going to be. The information I put down in that post was taken from an article with all kinds of information about the new A8. Just wanted to convey what I had read, in answer to a post. So I'm far from claiming to be accurate or correct. In fact I'm sure there are people on this forum that are better capable of talking about engines then I am. And I believe you are one of them, KjellA
