I'm erring towards no, but I'm not sure.
Adjuster has a D2 FL S8 with standard (S8) suspension where he ran 20x10's ET35 with 275's.
Reckons they fitted pretty good, but looked like they would foul the front guard if lowered.
With 40's, you're risking hitting the suspension a bit more, but might clear the guard better??

2001 S8, standard suspension that is lower than the normal A8, with 20x10 wheels, 275/30 20 Pilot Sport A/S tires.
They also have D3 tire pressure sensors in them.
For sale, 450.00 and you pay shipping, and they are YOURS.
Tires have 50% tread left or more.
These are dual compound tires, soft edges for high corner grip, with longer wearing all season compound in the middle that is good for wet conditions and on ice/light snow.
Wheels are Sport Edition 5 spoke designs, with very minor scrapes where they contacted car wash wheel guide rails. (Never any curbs.) The powdercoated wheels look great, and the very small chips can only be seen up close.
TPMS sensors alone are over 300.00 new.
I bought these new from TireRack for my 2004 A8L, and used them until I sold that car to buy the paid for 2001 S8 I drive now.
This is the car I had them on. (Clearly this is a photo of the car with the stock 18's on there, that I had my snow tires on.)
More close up photos of the wheels.
Right front.
Right rear.
Left rear.
Left front.
Sidewall detail.
Tread detail, and note, you can see where the tire scraped my left front fender skirt, and only that one. (This car is a prior total loss, so I'm not sure the frame is totally right, and it only hits on the left front fender skirt/edge right at the bumper cover to fender seam.)
More detail of tire tread. It's better than 50% wear left.

An S4 comes in with those same rims, he also got them mounted balenced in boxes from tire rack online, and i put them on. Nice looking wheels, looks good.

With the wider 275's on there, it's a cornering beast, that's for sure.
The 255 Conti DW's that I run now are very sticky, but don't wear as well as the Pilot Sport A/S's that are for sale. (But they are quiet, and ride smoother, not that the Pilots are bad, they are better than most, but just not as good as the Conti's that are amazing for such a low profile tire.)
Current wheels/tires on my S8. (Note these SUCK on ice and snow.) Wow, they suck, but dry or wet? It's amazing the level of grip these tires provide. With a slightly stiffer rear roll bar, this car might not push in the corners anymore until you are at speeds you will not likely see on the street much at all.

Would you tell me that if your car was lowered, lets say with St Coilovers that these wheels and tires would fit and clear with that kind of lowered ride height from coilovers? I'm not asking about stock D2 S8 right height, I'm talking about being lowered a decent amount as well as with a slightly higher offset at 40mm? Or do you think I would have to modify my mud guards? One thing I noticed is that you said they rubber the fender well on one side where the fender guard was not seated correctly and was irregular, is that the spot you said you had an issue only and no where else?

I wish Adjuster had a direct top view photo of how the front wheels sat in contrast to the fender so I can see how much work it will take to fit 20x10's in front with a lowered suspension.
I wonder if adding a little negative suspension camber to point the tops of the wheels inward would work? I bet the suspension when lowered will do that naturally anyway.
