'97 ABS and blinking break light on quick start
So I've had my new '97 A8 about a month now. Yesterday it did this funky thing when I cranked it up with the break light blinkin and the ABS light on. It did it twice more today. Simply turning the car off and back on waiting a sec and restarting it. Fixed the problem. Only thing i can tell is that giving it a few sec to do its self checks prevents the problem.
Any ideas? I just need to slow down with inserting the key and trying to crank instanly?
Thanks
Brit

Common problem, it's the speed sensor, either dirty or open circuit

# 7 is the speed sensor. There are many threads about this problem, but the "search" is not working as it should these days.

Earlier thread

Re: Common problem, it's the speed sensor, either dirty or open circuit
thanks for the info. Its wierd that I only seems to do it when I put in the key and try to start it instantly. But maybe a dirty sensor that doesnt inisalize properly. Any way I know about older audis and the speed sensors so I guess I'll take them out clean and reinstall. temp has gotten in to the 90s this week and maybe some slight change was just enughf to through them off a little.

Could also be an open circuit on the ABS wire upstream of the sensor
Marco also had this problem, he solved it after cleaning the sensors with no results.
Using vag-com, he figured out which wheel had the problem, then with the ignition on and the wheel off, excercised the ABS sensor wire while somebody watched the dash. He pulled and pushed on it and bent it....then he found where there was an intermittent open in the wire. He determined this by when the dash lights would come on when bending and moving the wire.
He cut and spliced a new piece into the wire, about 1' up from the sensor as I recall and all is fixed for less than $5.
A new ABS wiring sensors is not cheap at the stealer. I do not see any reason not to repair it versus replacement.
