'97 with 106,000 miles and still working
Well my '97 is fine as far as i can tell, (but I dont know if it ever had any tranny work done before I got it) when I recoded the tranny to 11 it was great for a while, till i started driving like a ***** due to the gas prices. I guess it learned I was driving like a *****!
I guess I need to get out VagCom and recode it again to reset it. BTW the recoding knocked about .2 off my 1/4 mile times with the GTech.

'99 w/96K miles - no tranny issues yet (knocking on wood)
My wife's 99 A8 has 96K miles with no tranny issues yet (knocking on wood). Filter and fluid changed at 62K. I cut open the filter which looked dirty but otherwise OK. I'll bet my wife doesn't drive as aggressively as most of the guys, however Colorado mountain roads take there toll on the cars/tires...

Oh, I have a late 99.5 I believe. It was built in late 1998, (DEC>
sold in realy 99. I got it off lease in april 02

Why play Transmission roulette?! Why not buy a @2000 or newer A8 They have many features that make them more desirable.

Guys thanks for all the answers.
The reason I am looking at the 99 is price.
How much does it cost for a new tranny ,labor and all ?
Are the rebuilds prone to the same failure ?
As far as buying this one I'll wait and see what the inspection says etc.
