A8 technical question
I'm a brand new member and joined because I read a fantastic article on this site about how to change the seal on the gearbox rear drive output flange.
I have a 1996 "A8 4.2 Quattro Sport" to give it it's full title, you guys only seem to talk about cars from 1997 onwards. My question is this: Is my car going to be exactly the same?
What I really want is to know how to check the oil level as I know my seal is leaking. Is my car going to be the same as the one in the article? If so, where is the oil check/filler hole??
Thanks so much for some really useful info on your forum!!
Paul.
I drive a 96 and apart from most forum members having the steering wheel in the wrong side the cars are the same with the odd subtle difference such as rear o2 sensors for emmission control and spec variations such as headlight and trims-suspension variations and brake options.
Generally speaking the US seem to get less options as their rules are stricter- until the face lift cars.
The trans oil is checked by removing the bung and while warm topping up until overflow-full procedure in the beloved Audipages-Search button will help.
My wife and I were in Scotland two months ago on the Isle of Bute where her family come from.
We travelled to Tyndrum and Edinburgh as well
very cool place
pryantcc - is your a 4-speed? Even if so, the procedure on Audipages (click the A8 line in my sig) will probably be similar. If you have a 5-speed AT, then the Audipages procedure is the ticket.
Also, note that the fluid behind the tail shaft seal is heavy weight gear lube, and not ATF.
I'm living just outside Dundee on the East coast of Scotland.
Yes, my car is a 4 speed!
What I really want to know is how much oil is left behind my output shaft flange. I need to do a long trip and don't want to do it without any oil!
So, a more precise question:
Is the oil behind my seal heavy gear oil, or ATF, given that I have the 4 speed box?
Also, if it's not ATF, how do I check the level and top it up??
Thanks,
Paul.
Nice to see a fellow Scot on here, I'm over on the west coast near Glasgow. Have a visit to tyresmoke.com as there are some UK specific gotchas too
