A8 transmission problem
I've got 100k and the tranny seems to be slipping off the line. Once I get to 20-30 mph its fine. problem happened suddenly one night.
Dealer who has terrible reputation says I need to replace and will cost $6,000. An import car specialist said he thought it could be something less serious based just upon what i've just said. I can't afford the 6k right now. My questions 1)what might happen if I continue to drive? 2)Is there a safety issue? 3) is there any way to put a "band-aid" on it? Any input would be appreciated! |
Try this before you spend $6000
<a href="http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/autotranservicing.html">Tranny Flush</a>
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33727&item=7939167 103&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW">Worst case, buy a rebuilt for $2000</a> |
Like he says!

after buying my A8, I asked my local German Auto Shop...
about the A8 Trans issues, he said that the local dealer was actually replacing 1 transmission a day on average last summer. All were all Audi Models with over 100K. Apperently the problem is on a grand scale. Luckly I've got 60K on mine, and I'm having the process done ASAP. I live in a cold temp climate which might help preserve the life a bit considering that part of the problem is heat related. Of course the vehicle has always garaged, so It's not like I'm starting the car at 30 degrees or less every day either.

Re: A8 transmission problem
Here's an interesting counterpoint. I called the leading import trany shop in Seattle. Asked about A8 transmission issues. The owner said not only had he never seen an A8 transmission in his shop...he'd never done work on any Audi except old 100/200s. These ZF's may be quirkie...but maybe more reliable than you know.

Re: A8 transmission problem
thanks for the feedback. Dealership diagnosed and said I'd need to get a new tranny- they don't rebuild them. They tried to reset codes which didn't work. A local mechanic said he'd take it apart and try to rebuild, minimum 13hrs labor

Re: A8 transmission problem
maybe cold weather climate problem?

Re: May take flushing it twice
I was told I needed a new transmission about a year ago. I've had the trans fluid changed twice since then. It's not perfect but it does run and shift well on the highway. It may need to be rebuilt one day but I would recommend even changing it a second time before you throw in the towl and go for the rebuilt. Good luck!

Re: Having same issue at 100K, but...
I'm going to be doing the double flush in the next couple days with a new filter. I'll let you know if that fixes it.
