A8 transmission question
Hey guys, I have a question for you. I have a broke down 2000 A8 SWB. I have been looking at buying a 2000-2002 A8 and using my other A8 as a parts car. I found a 2001 A8L with 100,000 miles on it, and the one issue is that it goes into reverse fine, but only goes about 5mph in reverse. The dealer claims that it drive fine in all other gears. My dad is going to check it out tomorrow and drive it. If that is the case, I am going to offer them the car as is. drive it until I can swap out trannys.
My question is: Is the 00 A8 SWB transmission the same as the 01 A8 with the long wheel base?? My gut tells me yes.

I have a 2000 swb A8 199k with a bad transmission, no forward gears.Ive been researching and have gotten from an audi tech the answer to yours and my question, yes and no.Yes they are the same transmission .No the valve body in 01 trans & wiring is diffrent than 2000 trans (throws codes).I was told by the tech if the valve body was swapped from the 2000 to the 2001 it would work as he had done this before. This then asks the question is your valve body good, The transmission in the 2000 A6 4.2 is the same as the 2000 A8 the difference is the axle flanges they need to be switched prior to installing. Hope this helped. Swapping a transmission shouldn't be such a challenge " truth in engineering "
