Does anyone know how much an Audi with 187K miles and a bad tranny could sell for?

My friend offer to help me by rebuilding the transmission. Anyone knows the ball park of how much cost would involve? What does he needs to watch out for?
He owns an auto service shop.

My friend called today and said the Axels broke and needs replacament. It might not be the transmission

Raxles.com is a common source for A8 axles, but you can probably find other sources.
