I have recently bought a 1995 A8 (in Australia) and have also been annoyed by the automatic volume compensation. Can anyone tell me how to disable this feature in this model car?

If it's the old one like mine, the system is called GALA. You press the tremble switch to let it out. Then, you pull the turn switch. Turn counterclockwise to disable GALA. Afterwards, press the switch back in. The base switch can also be pulled out for another function.

Thanks guys - great info - from the pictures of radios on silverd2's link it looks like the Delta CC radio. The guide told how to turn GALA off, exactly how dreamhope said. Seems to have worked - good excuse to go for a drive now to see if the volume changes or not. Also found that I could adjust the turn on volume of the radio in a similar way which was a bonus!
