Default Awfercrissake!....No reverse on the A-car! Is it done for? Any help appreciated!

No warning lights are on. Car will move slowly in reverse as if the clutch pack is slipping. Forward gears are all fine. Did not check for codes yet. STFA and found this is a somewhat common failure mode. Has anyone had a positive outcome with this short of a full rebuild?

Thanks in advance for any help!

My '01 has the same affliction. Been driving the '97 until I have time to diagnose it. VERY interested in any hints you run into.

Default Re: F seal I believe

The very "end" of the transmission has he reverse gearset and there is a seal that wears out.

Supposedly you could buy the F seal part, take off the transmission, and replace just that part. Not sure if that is the best option however.

Default Unfortunately we see it more and more on the 01' A/S8 and A6 4.2

The F piston that engages reverse and 2nd to 1st downshift blows. You have to completely disassemble the tranny to replace the F piston.

Default One option I am considering is doing a rebuild myself. I have previously performed a full

rebuild on a BMW automatic in my 535i, 4hp22 if I remember correctly. Do you think this one is much more difficult?

Other option is a trip to chicago! I always wanted to meet the famous Mr. Tozo anyway, just not under these circumstances.

Right now I really have time for neither.

It is similar, but much bigger/heavier and way harder to remove.
