Buying 2001 S8 With 66k; Good Idea?
I'm thinking of purchasing a 2001 Audi S8. Assuming I can track one down with under 75k, I'd love some input on whether these are reliable cars, any problems related to this model year, and any major maintenance issues. I'll look forward to your response! Thanks.

as much i like my car, A8 98 quattro 4.2. it bothers me to have so may things to repair, change etc... in 3 years i put close to 20k's into the car,(and still am),but it's very rewarding. i paid in cash for mine so no payments every month but a repair bill here and there, could of rented an 2007 rs4 for the same price....with a audi warranty. your pick...
now that i know that my car now is worth about 4k for the dealer.
i saw here that we can sell for 8k +- which i'm gonna try to do next automn.

Reliable is relative. An old Honda with crank windows and no AC is going to be more reliable. A Lexus or a 90's Merc is probably going to be more reliable.
I would not suggest buying one without a budget of at least $10k for repairs and skipped maintenance for the first couple years, maybe $15k. Less if you are a serious DIY'er (who can swap an AWD trans and do a timing belt on a 40v V8.) Given your mileage an extended warranty might be an option though.
These are great cars but there is a reason why they seem cheap to buy. Personally I have a hard time thinking of anything else I'd want, in a few years when my A8 could stand to be replaced I will probably be looking for a 2001-2003 with low-ish miles in great condition. However I really want that AWD for winter, if that was not the case the choices open up quite a bit.

Yes, it's a good idea. You simply can not touch the quality, style, power, and capability of this car for the money anywhere else. It was an $80K+ car that in mint shape is now in the mid to upper teens for a very nice low mile example.
I have had 15+ of them in the last few years, and keep in touch with all of my customers. They all love them, and while maintenance is required, and some have had electrical or small mechanical repairs, none has had any major (engine, trans, driveline, etc) issues. You can always get a warranty to protect against big stuff failing, but the D2 S8 is definitely one of the more reliable late-model Audis made.
That being said, make sure you do a full pre-purchase inspection at an authorized Audi dealer on any one you consider buying, as well as cosmetic check for paint or bodywork.
I sell both the cars and the extended warranties, so I see claims experience and the S8 is near the top for Audi relaibility from 2001 onwards.
Good luck, and if you need help with a car or warranty, just let me know.

Bruce,
Thanks for the reply. Could you email me with some info. regarding prices of extended warranties, what they cover, and for how long? Valid in all 50states?
You can reach me at: will.lazenby@rissman.com.
