Default C-Navi Questions

I've enjoyed playing with the navi system in my car (especially since I bought all the North America discs off of ebay)! I live in Denver and despite there being a good amount of construction, my system is doing things I'd expect it not to. I've messed around with settings in the navi menu, but it sure seems like the gal wants to take me on the shortest route and not the fastest route (she'll take me down side streets instead of the highway). In fact, just recently, I had the joy of being completely lost in the mountains and having gotten home via the navi...only, I was directed to drive on 10 miles of dirt road instead of the paved road that nearly paralleled the course.

I've read the documentation that came with the car, but I'm wondering if any of you have words of wisdom to share with me! While I like the idea of an integrated navi system, I'm seriously contemplating a $100 Tomtom...

Thanks in advance!

Ha! Messing around with the nav system, I found that if I select the traffic button, it allows me to pick alternate routes! I think this is the key to getting the route I want....
