can you replace the rear breather hoses without.....
taking off the intake manifold? i know the directions in audipages have you taking all that stuff off, but can it be done with a skinny arm and the loss of knuckle flesh? it seems that a few have done it, if i remember correctly from the search i did a few days ago.
i'm willing to rip up my arms a bit to avoid taking a good chunk of my car apart and risk screwing something up, so if anyone has done what i'm suggesting, can you give me a little input and any suggestions for accomplishing my goal? i have a 1997, i forgot to mention that.
thanks in advance,
don

My Independant mechanic was very proud to report ...
... he changed out the rotten read hoses last Spring without pulling the Intake.
I was surprised but happy.
It was not easy but it was done.

Its really easy to remove the manifold. I would go ahead and get some manifold gaskets and.....
throttle body gasket, vacuum lines while you are at it too. check out the "T" vacuum connector behind the manifold, sometimes its cracks and need replacement (you will get a check engine light and "to lean" code). All very easy to do. I used a wood plank and sat it to the right so that when I lifted the manifold, I would sit it to the right. There is a procedure on Audipages for the breather hoses. It took me 2 hours max.

You might be able to, but as gtreng1 points out there are other items back there.....

you may want to address. I did both of my valve cover gaskets at the same time as the rear breather hoses, and the vacuum lines to go south on a regular basis. It took me around 3.5-4 hours to do everything, and it wasn't very difficult. Follow the Audipages writeup and you won't have any difficulties. My A8 had 130K miles on it when I performed this operation.
