CarsDirect.com selling brand new '02 S8 for $100 over invoice
I don't know if this is an error on their web site or not, but they are presumably selling brand new '02 S8's for $6,882 below MSRP or only $100 over invoice. The pricing is for my local zip code in the LA area. Could the demand for S8 be so poor?

Says at the top of the page that the offer is not good for Ca or NY.
600 cars a year for North America. Want to bet that there are maybe a few hundred in all of the rest of the US for the whole year ?
It is a "theory offer". Meant to generate interest, but not direct sales. Used to work with a guy who did carsdirect stuff.

Here's the fine print for CA or NY...
If you click on the link, this pops up. Obviously this is wrong and the vehicle IS sold in CA. I am not sure what you mean by a theory offer. Does this mean that if I were serious about buying it at their price, they would try to wiggle out of a deal and demand a higher price?
"Not Available in New York and California
Due to emissions restrictions, this vehicle cannot be sold in New York, California, or any state requiring Northeast Emissions."

I read the link. Makes no sense for anyone to sell a car for that
price in the Ca or NY market when they can realize a larger profit easily in another way. The edmunds site bears this out - the '01 model did not have too much in the way of problems regarding slow sales. Yes, some dealers got greedy with the limited allocation, so at a few select dealer lots, you could see a few S8s lying around.
My friend at carsdirect was very upfront about aspects of limited availability of certain offers. He would start the customer/dealer conversation by clarifiying those details. Could be cash deal only. Applicable to cars in stock only. Limited geographic availability. Last year model. Demo models only. etc.
If it sounds too good to be true.....
