Default Centre of dashboard rattle.....

I'm sure I've read here in the past about a rattle from the centre of the dashboard, which most A8/S8's suffer from, yes?

I too appear to have this on my '99 A8 4.2, anybody cure the problem or investigate the origin?? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

My facelift '99 2.8 does produce a very slight rattle, but not consistently (probably temperature). Once when it was occuring, I applied a little pressure to the glove box door and it stopped the noise.
Due to some interior changes with the facelift model, do you think it could be isolated to post 04/99 cars?

Default Not in my Rattle Free 97

I am pleased to say you may be correct. So far my 97 A8 4.2 is tight as a drum with 76,000 miles. No rattles or squeeks. My neighbor with LS400 thought it was a bran new A8. (bought a couple of months ago)

Although I envy the rattle-free status of your '97 (and the 4.2 for that matter!), I have to say it is the only rattle in my '99 and a subtle one at that.

I personally think the latch on the glove box is responsible. Any takers?

Default For build, how does your '97 A8 compare to your neighbours '01 LS400?

mine rattles like an angry blonde girl from new jersey. Mostly from the side vents on the dash. Anyone know the fix?

Default Could be the ashtray in the centre

Has got a little latch which can go loose when Audi service removes the ashtray for access to the diagnostics socket. Also the diagnostics socket has a small plastic cover which can come loose. I have thrown mine away!
On the vents I used miserly some silicone spray and then just move the deflectors sligtly of centre and the rattle should stop.
But an A8 is quiet inside that any little noise sounds amplified and I have found that exactly because the car is quiet one often makes a mistake in guessing where the noise comes from.
