Possibly as simple as vacuum hoses....
My 00 A8 has a monstrous sized airpump in the airbox supposed to reduce emissions at start up.
Follow the hoses from there and make sure they are all connected.
One of my 3mm hoses was disconnected at a switch on top of the engine under the plastic cover..
Sorry I dont remember the codes though.
