CRAZY TRANSMISSION?
 

I bought my 1998 A8 4.2 quattro 2 years ago from the original owner who had only 95000 on it. He had trans. trouble at 75000 and the dealer installed a remanufactured trans then. I am now having and have had problems with the trans when it shifts from 3rd to 4th and then to 5th. It seems to shift to 5th way too soon and thus I get a lot of chatter in the gear. Someone told me my torque converter was disengaging for some reason because when coasting from 55 to 45 I get a clunk and the torque converter seems to catch again. Could this be related to the shift issue? I wish I could get the car to delay its shifting. I am not sure if the trans needs to be replaced or some sensor or something needs to be replaced. I now have 107,000 miles on it. Any body else have this kind of trouble? Please let me know.

Lots of D2s have the symptoms you describe. Others describe them a bit differently at times.

if you want to delay the shifting, just use the tiptronic to shift between 3rd and 4th, 4th to 5th.
