Default Cruise Control Possibilities???

I had an intermitten problem. The cruise stopped working and then it worked, and then it didn't work again. My assumption and my mechanic's assumption was that it was not an air leak, being it was not a consistant issue.

I did have the actual turn Signal and cruise control switch configuration replaced today and unfortunately that has not cured the problem. What other possiblites can it be? It's not a fuse issue, being that any fuses related with Cruise Control are linked to other things that all seem to be working fine.

I'm not positive but I think I remember when engaging the Cruise Control and listening to AM radio at the same time, there would be a clicking noise coming through the radio. That is not happening at the moment. I'm assuming the new switch was installed properly being that the turn signals and the light switch seem to be working fine. Oh well, I now have an extra switch in fine condition for a 97 A8 4.2 Quattro. Let me know if any of you may need such a thing? I can give it to you at a very reduced price and that will help me make up for my stupid mistake today of having the switch replaced. I was desperate to get this thing fixed and it seemed to be the problem for most of you on the board. Also, I refuse to bring my car to the local dealer. My usual mechanic's computer is on the blink so no Bently manual at the moment. I needed the cruise to work for this weekend when I'm taking a long road trip. Pure despiration, that's why I did what I did. Hope that explains it.

Let me know if anyone can help me out here?

Default Well, it seems that I bring up the F125 switch a bunch, but the cruise will not work if the F125...

... is acting odd. Does your passenger side mirror dip when you put it in reverse ( with the mirror control button set on the left side )?

When my F125 went it disabled the cruise, the mirror dipping, and had different issues with the trans, until it threw trans codes all the time.

No, my mirror only drops down toward the curb when the switch is set to the right, which it's supposed to. If it's a British car I would suppose that would be reversed. My passenger side view mirror is working the way it always has, which as far as I know is operating correctly.

Thanks

Dominic

Default I would do a complete inspection of the cruise control......

vacuum lines. These are a known problem, and an intermittant fail could be caused by a small crack or tear in a line that opens/closes based on vbration and thermal effects. Other than that, the cruise control controller is the only other obvious suspect item.

Default Could be the cruise computer

I know of at least one A8 owner who did everything you did, then got a used cruise control computer (control module) on ebay for about $50 and it solved his problem.

Can't say this is your problem, but it is a possibility.

I believe the control module was shared by the A4 and A6.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/99668.phtml">Here's the post from Jeff</a></li></ul>

Paul, first of all thanks. Also, Do you think replacing the cruise computer is a labor intensive job or is it something very easy to pop in?

Default Re: Cruise computer is easy to change.

It only takes 10 minutes or less to change and is located between the firewall and the windshield. It is actually slightly under the windshield if my memory serves me correctly. I believe that the computer was used in late model Audi 90s, A4, A6 so they are easily obtained on the used market.
