It's internal. You need to remove it with the swing press
AKA - hammer. Hold onto the axle stub on the joint while you try to knock the whole joint off the axle shaft. A plastic shot filled hammer is preferred, but steel will do too. Be careful.

I am to use my swing press on the outer portion?
|
Screw the center bolt all the way in first, tight, then use the hammer on the outer portion
of the cv joint. 4-5 blows should do the trick.

I got it off
thanks for the help!
Now to put it back on..... |
ARGH- another problem
While I was trying to fit the axle back into the transmission and hub the gold plate on the back of the inner cv boot that faces the transaxle popped off and leaked brown grease everywhere.
I can't figure out how to put this cap back on and what held it on in the first place! this is for a 2000 a8l |
Still a problem- what do you think?
I put the plate on the inner cv joint back on and installed the axle. The plate is in the correct spot and torqued down with the 6 triple square bolts but it would not stay on if i took the bolts off.
I lost a good amount of grease figuring this out but got it back on. Do you think the joint will be ok if I just put the car back together and drive it? I don't want to put everything back if I need to do something else. TIA |
Why I use raxles.com
The inner joint needs new grease also.....taking the whole thing apart is a real mess.
Took about 15 minutes total to replace it on a life with Tozo's help. |
