My mom asked a dealer about that, as her A6 we think was supposed to come with one...
He said they failed very often, heating elements I guess. They would replace them with non-heated units and patch up the electrical stuff. And yes, they'd explain things to their customers about it first. Cannot remember which dealer, Ohio though.

Figured since I don't really miss it and it costs $100 for the deal to even just take a look-see, maybe it's one of those things I'd get to on my own one of these days. The aibag thing is always a hurdle, but I'm up for a challenge.
