D2 vs D3 - first impressions
So I'm looking to replace my aging 99 D2 190K with various issues (oil leak, impending timing belt job, needs new axles, suspensions creaks .... worth all of 2k) and I got some seat time in a 2006 A8L today. The car in question https://boulder.craigslist.org/cto/6300609324.html seemed like it had been well taken care of and $8.5k seems a fair price. My first impressions was that is was not as quick off the line as my old D2, even with 1/4 mile numbers and 0-60 numbers that say differently It's 500lb heavier but has more power and torque so perhaps I was asking too much but mashing on the accelerator and getting to 80 or so I noticed that she did rev past 6000rpm (sport mode) but it didn't seem like we were getting there any faster than my old girl? The interior with the L extend legroom seems lovely and the whole interior seems like a nice upgrade. The suspension seems to be less crashy than my old D2 but she was sporting the 19 inch wheels and was not exactly super soft. Car has one air bag replaced, the trunk didn't go up with out a little push (common issue I believe) and a control arm done but I'm sure the others bags will go with time as well as the car eating control arms and suspension parts like my D2.
So am I asking too much, perhaps I should get an S8 or just get a prestine D2 with 60k on her. I know the d3 has no timing belt to change and seems to have less transmission issues but I was not totally blow away by this car with 134k vs my 190k D2. Perhaps I'm expecting too much from a 10 year old car - one can get a 2.5 Jetta for 11k too

It's mildly amusing that you think your car is worth $2k.
The D3 still has the timing belt (potentially better) until 2007, the chain engine has other issues and the belt is straightforward, plus there's the water pump, thermostat, etc. that can be serviced with the belt.

Amusing for you, not the poor bastard who has to sell it. I am fully aware of what is involved in changing it I've had the car for almost 10 years. The entire engine would need to be pulled to correct all the oil leaks and let's not talk about the transmission and but it has been replaced and the local shop who did it has some kind of warranty with it I think. So perhaps it's worth even more than 2K that might be amusing too. My plan is to actually drive it until the belt breaks and leave it by the side of the road and get the rag and bone man to come and haul it off for scrap aluminum

That's pretty much what I am doing with my 2001, I doubt I could get $2K for it and it's pretty sorted out and useful so I am driving it until it either dies or becomes unreliable.

Prestine d2 s8 is going to be very hard to find, ones with 60,70k mls are priced around 15k for which you can get d3 s8.Prestine d2 a8 same thing i think.
I like d3 s8 sound and the fact that it doesnt have a fan clutch.

Another big thing is what happened to the bloody ski sac! What am I meant to do put the skis on the roof! The ski sack was perfect through the skis in of you go sure they might stick a little bit between the two kids in the back but who cares now I've got to get a bloody roof rack - fail
