Diesel Conversion

Is it possible to put a modern diesel engine in a 2002 A8L D2 4.2?

Some guy on another forum put a 1.2 VW into a a8 and was pretty happy about it until he broke two 6speed transmissions. Said it got 60+ mpg but eh dunno If I believe that.
