Edited This may help anyone with the shifter lock out-brake light switch fault
I was told today by a friend who has a Golf that when he got a light on the dash and was unable to select gears that next time he should move the key to the first click then the shifter to between N and D and then start car and quickly move into Drive and go quietly home or to the shop.
Be aware you may have no stop lights at the rear.
If you need to reverse then move the shifter quickly without pausing in nuetral
