Default Engine temperature alert

Hi guys, I am new to the forum. I recently bought this 97 A8 from a friend and since then I have been following this forum. It's been very helpful. Couple of days ago I ran into this problem. I am getting engine temp alert with three beeps. But the temp gauge looks fine. Should I just take it to a Audi shop or is there something I can fix myself? Could someone point me in the right direction?

TIA

Default Thats probably your coolant level. Check that first. Big tank with the pink stuff (well should)

Thank you so much for the quick response. I will check that out tonight. Any recommendation on brand/store for the coolant?

Default I would only use audi approved coolant. It says what type on my overflow bottle,

not sure if it will on yours since my car is a C5 A6. G12 is what mine says ...

Default Strong ditto to using G12 only.

It's also available at VW dealers (and at a lower price).

Default G12 Ingredients.

The Audi cooland seems to have a significant quantity of Sodium Hydroxide, a strong alkali (buffer?). I think this is the source of the white residue around leaks that you don't see with Prestone, etc. I guess it's to protect the aluminum but it probably is also why o-rings go out in these cars.

Default Re: Coolant + water??

I checked the coolant it is way lower than the MIN mark. I went to Audi dealer and bought coolant but that guy told me I need to mix water(half and half)? Is that true? If so, can I just mix water from my kitchen faucet or does it have to be distilled?

Default 50:50 is correct.

Distilled water is preferred, but tap water is OK in a pinch. The main disadvantake of tap water is that it contains cacium and magnesium (hardness) that can precipate out as salts on the internal surfaces of the radiator and inhibit heat transfer. I expect that 95% of the dealers use tap water.

Default I would check for any coolant leaks if you continue to lose fluid. Watch it frequently.

Unless you have oil in your coolant, you are leaking somewhere check for the white crystal residue from dried coolant. The nipple part where the over flow hose goes in is a weak point. The upper radiator hose is a weak point as well. Some leak by the transmission cooler.

Where does that info come from? Straight sodium hydroxide (pH 14) will dissolve aluminum in short order. Just curious.

I worked at a paint plant that has a caustic (sodium hydroxide) hot tank for cleaning steel tools and equipment. (Also works well for cleaning up greasy cast iron engine blocks and heads.) A construction contractor found an aluminum paint spray pressure tank, about 2 gallons, and threw it in overnight for soaking. The next morning - "Damn, somebody stole it!" The gauges and some miscellaneous hardware were still there at the bottom, but no tank.
