Default Timing Belt time

The seal on my timing belt cover has slipped down into the belt on the left side. Today shredded fibers of belt are coming out of the gap from the rubber seal. I looked at it today because yesterday the car started misfiring and chugging at stoplights and just regular driving.

I am ordering what I can but the tools is where I am stuck. I have read all the threads on this but there are so many different ideas of how to do it. I was convinced to just mark the belt and count the groves now that it looks to be shredded and I am a TB virgin I am thinking of doing it the hard way.

I love my A8 and plan on buying more of them. For that reason I do not want to rent the tools. Buying what I need is how I would like to go.

Is this a good all in one kit? Does it really have all I need?

Any links to tools would be great!
Thank you for your help.

1st..I don't even recognize most of the tools in that kit, don't see ones that are needed and find it "troubling" that seller doesn't itemize them. There are a lot of tools that do not work on all those cars for a complete timing belt job...in fact, many tools are different from 32V to 40V A8 engines (97-99 and 00-03).

If you don't have a Bentley manual, I highly recommend it...that info came straight from Audi and it will pay for itself the first time you use it...less than the cost of 1 hour of Audi labor.
Even if you're going by an online tutorial, double check critical steps with the real manual...I always do, even with tutorials I wrote myself.

Look at the Bentley for a list of tools needed for the 32V motor (won't be all the same as a 40V)...and look at the tutorial below, which also lists special tools. Usually, I find special tools individually much cheaper on eBay from different sellers, many of which are bargain tool companies carrying tools that work just as well as "the real thing".

With my "minimalist/shortcut method" I found was a must were the special tools required to remove the viscous fan (3212 & 3312...ebay equivalents), the crank lock tool (3242...ebay) and eccentric roller tool: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Schle...item415c717a65

Item 3312 on ebay comes up with many odd things. I did find this

Is this right?

So many posts asking for the tools needed for this job.... Thank you for posting some help to the novice A8 mechanic.

Remember, if you're working on a 32V engine (97 A8?), many of tools and the procedure are VERY different....The only similarities between the 32V and 40V (my '01 engine) are that they're both 4.2 liters. Other than the most basic configuration, there are no real similarities between these 2 engines...the 40V is a near complete redesign...different heads, coolant plumbing, oil circuit, timing belt layout and tensioning components, etc.

The 3312 is simply a thin, long 32mm wrench to fit the viscous fan nut, while holding it in place with a 3212 (or any equivalent) pin tool...NOT what you found on eBay...I already had a special 32mm wrench in my bicycle tools.
I don't really know if the fan nut is the same size on a 32V engine or requires the thin wrench instead of a just regular crescent wrench.

The 32V does not take the 3242 crank lock tool...no where to put it on that engine...40V engine only.

I don't fully agree with some of the alternate methods in the AudiPages article on 32V belt change (esp the described method of removing the viscous fan, without a pin tool...BAD idea!)....SO, if you are going to tackle this major, but doable job, take my advice and get a Bentley manual...worth every penny...even if you take shortcuts, which I've learned through lots of experience...don't take chances when in doubt.

Very good point.

This will work for the wrench.

MAN, what a mess!!
Lucky you didn't jump time enough to bend some valves.
I'm guessing you "may" have jumped a little, if you were getting misfires.

Default Square or Round?

There is more to this crazy saga. The kit I bought from Ebay was a great deal and when I called them to question how the picture did not match what was to be shipped, they had all the right answers. When the package showed all the parts seemed to be as they should.
Today I am installing the parts.....

So we start off with the Timing Belt Roller. The center part is to fit in the place holder and it is too large.

Next up, The offset thing does not fit in the roller, real nice..

Here we have a Tensioner Roller. Very new and clean. Wait, what is this. The pin does not fit in the slot on the car. Easy fix! use the old one... next slide please.

And here we have the old pin. What a surprise, it does not fit.

Will be calling them on Monday and getting the correct parts. What a pain in the a.

With all the fun of the parts being all wrong, I moved to the valve cover gaskets. Look to new post to see what I found there.
