Euro spec 2000 S8 for sale in vermont ...

The local indi shop has a gray market 2000 S8, silver on black for sale here. It has US windshield and cats with aftermarket (loud) exhaust, but everything else, books, guages, stickers, all still seem to be german.
VIN: WAUZZZ4DZYN008222
They are asking $16,900 with 67,000 miles; seems to be decent shape, but a bit more wear than my '97 on things like the door grab handles and such.
What does gray market do to the value of cars? Is it like salvage where it halves or worse the resale value?
If it was a stick I would be all over it like dogs on bacon, but as it is an auto, would it be better to just go for one with less odd-ness and get a US spec one to avoid future issues?

200 0 Audi S8 Quattro

For that price I would buy a US Spec S8
First off, when you go to insure it, no company will agree that it is a 2000, because they never came to the US then.
Upside: Bi xenons.
Does it have a US instrument cluster? It has that ugly rear antenna vs. US S8's that have it built into the rear window. That's one thing I love about my car, no visible antennas anywhere.
Does it have a Nav Plus? If so, has it been converted to US maps?

No point...
....what's the benefit of getting it grey market where you have a lot of hassles and unknown resale value??
Is it more horsepower? Manual trans? Unique exterior or interior? That's why I would pay similar or even more money compared to a US car. Uh, no, in this cae, it's, um, bi-xenons! LOL
Most important is does it have all the DOT/EPA/NHTSA approvals, door jamb stickers, VIN# replacement tags, bumpers, door beams, OBDII, and/or whatever else is needed to make it US legal? Was it brought in by a registered importer and legally converted to US regulations and if so where is all the documentation?
Speaking as a guy that has brought in dozens of Euro cars, some legal, some questionable, I can tell you this; if you get into an accident with that car, and it causes injury, signifcant property damage, or worse, you'd better have all the papers to prove it's legal. Because otherwise a good lawyer will take everything you have and are ever going to have, and your insurance company will void your coverages if it's a true grey-market non-federalized car.

Is the engine an AYS and the transmission an FBG?
If yes and you liked the car and it is federalized, offer them less than half of what they are asking. If not run away.. it may be very hard to get parts for this car in the US.

it was brought in by a greek citizen when he was teaching in wisconson ...
It does have the ugly antenna and the euro gauge cluster; nav plus, but not sure on the maps. It does pick up tv though until that goes obsolete in February.
All in all though it sounds like I would be better off skipping it and hanging on to my 97 until the cream puff I am looking for comes by.
Thanks for the insight guys!
