Default Factory Navigation

My car didn't come with any paperwork (other than a detailed CarFax report) so I ordered a factory owner's manual from Bentley Publishers.
There is no info on the factory navigation system, so i assume the car originally came with a separate user manual.
Bentley doesn't is the factory nav system worth keeping?
I'm used to Garmins and Tom Toms along with MS Streets and Trips with the puck... I have the feeling that time has passed the factory system by, and if so I'll strip it out when I changer the audio system.
I wouldn't mind clearing out the left side compartment of its changers for a corner loaded sub.
Also, is there a benefit to any part of the factory telephone system? My new HU will allow for iPod and Bluetooth integration, so i doubt there is anything left I would need of it, but I'm certainly willing to listen.

Factory nav in a D2 is not much to crow about compared to tomtom. i would not bother striping it out, unless you want the space in the trunk for the nav cd drive. otherwise it's integrated into the center cluster check display, which you need anyway, and is an extra button/**** in the center control under cuipholder cover, which would look weird if you removed it.

the phone system can be used for its speaker and radio mute, but again, bluetooth systems have kind of passed it by. but lots of people integrate theior phones using components of the factory system and it works well.

if you want a tomtom, i posted on another forum that i have a few xl 330 systems, brand new in the box, left from a closeout i bought. $95 delivered anywhere in 48 states. best price for new unit (not refurbished) on web that i found was $128 plus S&H.

Thanks for the reply. I won't tear anything out that cannot be easily plugged back in- I may look at removing the electronics in the cupholder area if I can figure out how to enlarge it in a way to make it more useful. It is the proper term for that area, though- as the size allows about an 8 oz container.
And I don't find the center display at all useful when the sun is up- polarized sunglasses interfere with viewing.

The only thing you give up with the factory nav system is dead reckoning. The factory system is integrated so that when the GPS receiver looses signal, the system is still receiving speed information from the car. AFAIK, Aftermarket systems rely exclusively on the antenna. Another pricey option is to install a later system with a video monitor. Still the latest aftermarket combo GPS, Headunits like the AVIC are pretty awesome.

Did your car come with the phone module in the trunk and any phone cradle? If so and you want to part with any of them let me know.

Thanks

Yes. In case you don't get my email- I do intend to remove the phone system, nav and factory BOSE system.
I have all the parts and pieces to upgrade (other than fabbing a fiberglass enclosure for a corner loaded sub), but with my crazy schedule, there's no telling when I'll be able to wedge this project in. Hopefully some time this summer before it really heats up. I was really hoping to have the time to get the audio install completed for an upcoming mobile audio meet in a few weeks, but that's not gonna happen.
I'm going to look into modifying the existing factory GPS puck for use with aftermarket nav, and if I can somehow wedge both the nav and XM in there, that will be nice.
