first impressions on the Avon tech 550 a/s- 245-45-18....
I got them on, on the perfect day for a tire test(excluding snow). Severe rain to completely dry. In both conditions great quite tire, pretty good in the twisties. excellent ride. all around good tire especially at the price. Ive got about 100 miles on the tire and i love them so far. hit about 109mph very stable. we will see how things go, i will have put about 2000m on these by the end of next week.

i think paul meant to say "what noise?" :)
noise level when new and at ~1000 miles are the same ... very very quiet, especially compared to my old bridgestone potenza tires (they were absolutely horrible). with the avons imho, only if you're REALLY REALLY listening for it, you'll hear it ever so slightly at ~65 mph. barely noticeable. like i said, still very happy after 1000 miles.

I was deciding between these and the contiprocontacts. Review of conti's if anybody is doing same.
I was a little leary of Avon since it's exclusive to Tirerack and supposedly manufactured by Cooper? I prefer having local after sales support, so I'm a fan of local tire stores, and most will work with the price after you tell them you're cross shopping online. Went with the contiprocontacts just because they were the only other m&s tire in 245/45-19 besides the elusive pirelli nero and I generally have liked my previous conti's (bought contisport2 when it first came out before it became oem tire, and then had new audi with same as oem).
My review; very very soft tire, very quiet initially. Now after 2000 miles they're still quiet but on certain types of pavement they make a slight tread hum. I have an L, so laterally grip isn't exactly a high priority but the softness of the tire makes itself felt in cornering. As noisy as the stock potenzas were, they certainly had more lateraly stiffness. My second highest priority was wet traction since I'm in Seattle. On all types of pavement wet traction (lateral, with quattro straight wet traction is never really an issue) is excellent. Way better than I ever expected from such a plush tire.
Overall though, I'm not sure they were worth another $50 a tire over the Avon after reading the two reviews ... they both sound like the tire supplies what I was looking for.
