Floor Mat befuddlement

Floor Mat befuddlement
Hey -
Got my '98 earlier this year, and I figured it was time to get some new clean OEM mats. Here's where I'm confused:
It came with mats that with no logo at all. But when I remove them, there isn't carpet underneath - the floorboard (or whatever it is) is exposed. They are very thick mats with some foam padding added where the floorboard is exposed.
Here's where I get confused - those mats have 'audi ag' on the backside of them, but I cannot read the part #. Since I don't have any friends with A8's I don't know if this is standard. I bought some 'oem' mats off ebay (with the A8 logo), and I'm wondering if they are designed to go over the other mats.
Am I making any sense here? Anyone have any thoughts?

You are correct with that explanation. In my '99 I had ECRU
rugs (thick ones no logo ) under BLACK with Audi Rings on top. It gave it a classy two tone look. Try it, plus the BLACKS showed less dirt. In fact when I purchased the '99 it had the TWO layered ECRU look and I made the sales rep take 4 black logo mats and install on top of the ECRU.

Re: Agreed, that's the acoustic mat. There's a floor mat which is much thinner that goes ...
Thanks so much guys!
Should have guessed that, but it is a bit different that most vehicles. Wonder if you can order those, as mine are a bit ripped. I'll give Wendy a buzz.

Re: Floor Mat befuddlement
You can get OEM mats from your dealer with the A8 logos on the front set. I just picked up a new set of four since when I got my car it didn't have any. For the set of 4 I paid about $130 from my local dealer which included a 20% discount. They also sell the ORIGINAL mats that would have come with the car when it was new, but those do not have the logos and are about twice as much.
