Default Forced cabin air circulation - How does it work?

What I'm curious about more specifically is what purpose the vent on the rear of the "Hat Shelf" serves? (I've learned to use the Bentley manual lingo, or be forced to forget about ever using the Search function with any success)

I know that it has something to do with air circulation, but after taking my rear bumper cover off and discovering some slats with rubber flaps on the left side, my curiosity was piqued. I did a quick check and apparently the two are related, which makes sense.

How does this system work!?!

Default You need goes out if you want to put air in

It vents it through the hat shelf, into the trunk, out the bumper.

You need an air path to escape, not just air going in otherwise you'd pressurize the cabin!

Default Touche. Figured that the car wouldn't be completely airtight, but...

I was wrong. Is there specific ducting for it or does the trunk also exchange air?

At any rate, I noticed that I'm missing one of the little rubber flaps on mine. Is this at all important, or not so much?

Thx again
