Front Suspension

Hi folks, I have an 1999 Audi A8, 4.2 Ltr Petrol 305 BHP Saloon. There is a very small amount of play in the front swivel lower control arm front swivel on the nearside of car. Looking on E bay everything that looks about right they reckon isn't compatible. The part No that looks about right to me is 4D0407151P, does anybody know the correct part number for my car, or a supplier that might get it right? If I cant get the right arm I guess I will have to replace the swivel into the old arm.

Hey Oilyman.2,

Check out FCP Eruo. They can get you in the right direction. Below is a link to their web site.

Good luck.

Hi thanks for fast reply, I should have added that I am in the UK but I will have a look the link you sent and it may be worth paying the extra postage and Tax etc.

oilyman.2 Have you tried RockAuto.com? I have used them for several parts on my 2000 A8 and good prices too. They list the suspension parts as lower forward, lower rearward, upper forward, upper rearward. I installed both uppers on the right side, installed without issue, and seem to be holding up just fine.

Throw a magnet on your upright. If it sticks, you are using the correct part number. If the upright is alloy, then order an arm from a 2001 A8, I believe that part number ends with a K instead of a P

Ideally you want some Lemfoerder arms as they were the OEM manufacturer. I believe TRW was also OEM. Nowadays, counterfieits are so rampant, it's always a bit of a crapshoot. Ideally genuine Lems gets you OEM quality at aftermarket price.

For the Audi part number, go here: https://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a8.../a8q/1999-257/

There was a mid-year split based on your vin number, so check that you are looking at the correct listing. They also list some unique parts for armoured versions. Won't be needing those. In the middle of the 99 run they switched from a steel to an alloy upright. The difference is in the diameter of the tapered snout on the ball joint.

The part number you listed is for the early VIN 99s : 4D0407151P The later VIN cars use 4B3407151K.

Once you have the number, plug it in here and you will see a list of dealers offering the part for the best price.: https://oemwolf.com/

Better still for a control arm, you should be able to get it from, heck Amazon, I suppose, using that part number. Try it with and without the spaces.

This is from PartsGeek in the US. Note the split at chassis number 5500 and 5501.

Hi, Thanks folks for your help, I need to start again with the info because I have got stuff wrong. Because car is a low mileage I think its on the original TRW arms the part no I can clearly read is 4D0407155 P.
The wheels are 17" the upright pillar is steel not aluminium. I am not sure if engine is 305 BHP or 310 but believe it to be the latter.
All my searches on line seem to lead me to 4D0407151. I believe the difference may be in the taper size but most on line sites don't give taper size. Obviously until I separate the joint I don't know what the taper size is.
I have a nasty feeling that the 4D0407155 arms are no longer available new but I am hoping I am wrong. There are arms on line that are supposed to be OK with 16 to 18" wheels but they all seem to be related to part no that ends in 151 not 155. Has anyone else had this problem?

4D0407151P is the correct part.

This online UK part site lists both part numbers as the same item: https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/metzger-7080759.html

US part suppliers list the 155P for A4s and C5 A6s, and the 151P for the D2 A8. The US D2 was only offered in 3.7liter V8 front wheel derive and 4.2 liter Quattro.

They are interchangeable.

Thanks Brian, I will get that ordered up, I should have added that the car is the quattro but from what you say they are interchangeable. Many thanks.
