Fuel Pump Replacement Costs

Fuel Pump Replacement Costs
My 1997 D2 with 133K on it, sputtered to a stop in the neighborhood the other day and I had it towed in to the dealer. It seemed like a fuel delivery problem and they have since confirmed that the fuel pump has gasped its last 93 octane. They are proposing to replace it with a new one, but the quoted cost is staggering... In total, more than $1350 to replace the pump.
Has anyone had to replace theirs lately and at what dealer-performed-service cost? The $1350 does include $150 for "expedited shipping" (we call it FedEx, but I guess that doesn't sound expensive enough), but the overall bill seems extraordinarily high. They are quoting the pump price alone at over $750. Anyone have any recent experiences or alternatives to suggest? Thanks in advance for any help. TwoTonic is about to switch to Two Double Gin-and-Tonics to make the pain go away. Thanks!

Re: Riverside Audi lists the fuel pump at $616......pretty close, plus
In fairness the $1350 included $101 for 'diagnosis', which I think must be a flat-fee for the first hour. There was fuel filter change in there, too, along with 3.5-4 hours for the pump change itself, per 'the service book'.
I was just stunned at the $750 for the pump, though. My BMW mechanic, who works on the M5 and M3 and who thinks BMW usually sets the record for outrageous-pricing-on-common-parts, was speechless. He'd thought he was guessing high when he estimated a grand for an Audi fuel pump replacement.
Riverside's a great suggestion. I might try to get the part only from them and have my own mechanic do the replacement.
Thanks!

I paid ~ $850.00 a couple of years ago, had it done
by my indy, pump alone was 500.00. Just did a search and found the pump for about 300.00

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=215021</a

Thanks for the link. That's way more reasonable. I'd called my local independent sources and gotten an answer along the lines of "Oh, that's a dealer-only part...".
Really appreciate it.

Fuel pump is one of many extremely pricey replacements, alternatives exsist
The fuel pump in my A8 went to pump heaven less than a year ago, at 165K miles. The quote I got to replace it at the stealer was close to $2K all included. I told them "no way", and called a friend of mine that knows his way around Audis, he used to be a mechanic at a dealership.
He told me that there is only one official part # for it, which includes the housing, cables, connectors and I believe also the level sensor. The part alone was close to $1K here.
He also said that the problem is normaly the electric pump itself, a pretty common Bosch unit that can be replaced by disassemblying the housing. He got the pump at a Bosch dealer (less than $200), and did the job in just over two hours.
