Default Fuel smell and seal replacement

I've got what seemed to be the typical fuel smell and leak at the top of the tank, under the access panel in the turnk. Fuel smell after filling the tank, CEL for small/intermittant Evap Sys leak around 3/4 tank.

I bought the repair kit at the dealer for $25 (found it for $18 online, but with shipping, it was almost as much anyway). BTW, part number 4D0-298-135-B, is known as "Repair Kit"- I had been searching on terms like "gasket", "seal", "o-ring", etc with no luck.

Unfortuneatly, the problem remains. I looked at it today since I got the CEL on the way home, and sure enough, there was a little gas in that same depressed area. It almost seems like it's coming from under that purple cap with the wires sticking out, not the big white locking cover from the repair kit.

So on to my questions: Can anyone confirm a part name, part number, etc for that seal? I had gotten a copy of the ETKA page from the dealer, and I think it's piece 25 on that drawing (A8Q, '98, MG:2, SG:01, Illustration 201-90). Anyone else have the same problem (that wasn't fixed by that repair kit)?

Thanks,
Tony Z (glad I filled up at $2.69 before gas prices went nuts)

Default My car does the exact same thing.

I replaced the fuel sending cap and it did not help. I get an intermittant gross EVAP leak error.

I am goign to pressurize the tank and try to find the leak.

Default But was it the same one I've already replaced, or something different?

Now I'm wondering if I should just find some "fuel system friendly" silicone or other sealant and just start gooping it up...
