Default Gentlemen... HELP...How do you get the %^&*$# drivers side AC vent out?

I'm replacing my drab S8 wood with some groovy Sequoia Vavona wood scored from Awdinut Ed. My interior looks like Tozo's when he was painting. EVERYTHING has to come apart to replace what could have been a simple pop on installation. Doors are the way everything should be attached! Are there releases for this AC vent? Is so, where? Also, the radio surround is held on by 4 pop off studs, but I haven't been able to just pop the old one off with trim sticks, and I don't want to break it as my replacement is already broken. How much force is enough? I know, just b/4 it cracks! But if anyone has done these things share the secrets with me please.

Default Damn, can't get my picture host working...

E-mail me if you want me to send you .pdf files detailing the removal of the vents.

Default You gotta pull the "knee panel"...

Once you have that off, there are two 5mm allen screws holding the vent in from below. Once you wiggle the vent out, reach up and pull the clip that is holding the wood into the dash. There is no need to loosen the 5mm nut.

The center console piece requires a good amount of force. Plastic pry bars ain't gonna cut it with that puppy! I just pulled it with my finger tips, above the ash tray and all the way towards the engine. I tired to "leverage" off my thumbs on the HVAC panel as much as possible as that kept me from ripping the thing off once the bottom two pegs released....you know, that whole "potential energy" thing.

Default Knee panel is off, but vent only wiggles out about 1/2". I guess I just need to

do the big bear thing on the vent and radio surround. Thanks.

Default For the radio, pull on the bottom, pop the bottom, then the top will come out easier

If the radio is pulled, it might be easier....that's the way I did it on my 97 with a facelift and on my S8.

Default My car looks like your car now! The vents were the worst!

I am too old/brittle/fat to get upside down in the foot well, and using a mirror I took out the two bolts holding the knee panel, and thinking that was all, PULLED the &^%$* vent thing out, before I discovered there was another real bolt holding it in. Now have about 40 itsy bitsy broken pieces! Live and learn. I will remove the radio first before probably destroying the surround tomorrow. Must listen to the Hockey Mom now. Thanks everyone for the help. This forum ROCKS!

Default It's also VERY helpful to pull the side vent on the side of the dash...

....the one that pushes air into the door. It's a single phillips head screw in the bottom slat. I found that allowed me additional access to wiggle and push the dash vent out.

I will admit, it is tricky and it had to be wiggled just right to get it out.
