glove box problem
I just got a 97 a8 love the car, but I can't get the glove box open. Move the key either vertically or horizonitally push the button and nothing. This is one thing I thought I checked out but guess i didn't. Any suggestions?
I'm sure I'll come up with other questions and issues as I got the car for what I believe was a good price. Very clean 62K for $23,000, includes new dunlops,
appears to be completely loaded. Has sun shades, heated seats, phone, Bose.
Couple other questions as I type.
two switches look like fog and driving light symbols on them what are they for?
switch on right side of panel with a seat and a down arrow what is it's function?
What is the solar looking panel in the S/R?
the aluminium molding around the shifter has some scratches I would like to replace it how to do?

Re: glove box problem
Move the passenger side seat as far back as it goes. Leave the door open and lay down with your legs hanging out of the passenger side door. Under the glove box there is a short cable it is around 4" long it may be a little hard to find but feel around and you will find it. Pull on it until you here a click. At this point your glove box will be free. They jam up. It will be fine once you free it up. This is very common.

Some answers ( did you by from a dealer ? - shame on them )
Greg handled the glove box question.
The button with down facing lamp rays are the fog lights. The button with the straight rays is for the rear fog light.
The rear headrests are electrically adjusted ( as is the lumbar back there ) via buttons on the lower front seat corners of the rear seats. To lower these from the driver's position, there is a button on the console to drop them. I believe that is the button to which you refer.
Your seat belt height and headrests are controlled electrically with the seat buttons.
The solar panel is part of the warm weather package. Whenever it is more than 85 inside of the car and there is enough light, it will power an fan ( independently from the rest of the electrical system ) that exhausts warm air from the car. Your power rear sunshade works ?
Note: Phone reception and radar detectors can be affected by the metallic coating in the glass of the cars with a warm weather package.
You can polish the shift gate ( gently ! ) cover with Mother's metal polish. The shift gate cover is a tad $$$.
Enjoy ! Sounds like you found a nice one !

Re: Some answers ( did you by from a dealer ? - shame on them )
April,
Thanks for the scoop this is a great site!
This car came via a broker, therefore the questions. I did chech some of the history via a couple of dealers and one in Seattle was very friendly and helpful, my local dealer does not have that reputation and demonstrated why they have this reputation.
I need to get a owners manual any suggestions?
This might be a silly question do all A8's come with f&R fogs? I have had them on previous cars but can't detect either f/r fogs on this car.
Can the temp on the CC and the onboard comp be changed to read in F vs C.
The car is clean and will be cleaner as I am kind of a freak that way.
I am a little surprised by the road (rolling) noise I have new Dunlop 5000's is this a particularly noisy tire?
Any hints on what to what out for?

You can try to get a manual from the used car dept at a dealer.
They often stockpile old manuals.
The F&R fogs are kinda hard to spot - especially front. Turn the lights on and then have someone else switch off and on the fog lights while you stand at the front or rear.
The displays can be adjusted in many ways. The manual is very helpful.
If certain specific things are still confusing, see your favouite Audi service advisor for assistance. They cannot do a delivery process for you, but can help out with little things. You can also ask to have an ABS go over the car with you. Will cost about $60 and take 40 to 60 minutes. Make sure that they have had A8 training as some are really an ABS in training and have not completed the class. Best bet is to find a dealer in the nicest neighbourhood.
SP9000s are much more quiet, but lose some all weather capability.

Re: glove box problem/ now lets go from F. to C.
Just in case you have not figured out how to go from F to C or C to F in your temp control here you go..
On the digital climate control unit you will see the recirculation arrow to the left of the economy button. Press and hold this button down at the same time hold down the + button on the DRIVERS SIDE temp. select.

Re: glove box problem/ now lets go from F. to C.
Greg,
thanks worked like a charm, I was wondering how to change C 2 F. Otherwise car seems great! It is hard not to get in a just continue down the highway at a rapid rate of speed. I'm very impressed with how small the car feels for its size. I could do with a less road noise. Funny thing up until this purchase I didn't really notice how many A8's are on the road in my area.
