Greetings to All
Well guys I'am a proud new owner of a 01 silver
and black S8.The car is beyond words, after a
long search, I'am really lucky to have found
such an outstanding automobile.
I have a few questions for you guys, the car has
29k on it, but at times the tranny seems to
shift a bit awkwardly. Now I went to audipages
and read the recoding page, and it describes
the problem perfectly, the car lurches and there
isn't a smooth transition of power.
Now my questions are, should I recode the tranny
with the Ross device, should I do this or does
Audi dealer handle it, where do I get the codes?
or should I leave it alone and get use to it
any answers will be a big help, thanks

If you plan on doing any work on the car yourself and don't want to rely on the dealer for service information then spend the $300 for the Ross-tech software/hardware and the Bentley service manual on CD rom. You will need a laptop or spare computer to connect the car to the computer.
Hope this helps!
I recoded my transmission 6 months agao and it feels like someone put racing fuel in my car!!! Totally different car. Good luck!

PAGING RANDY: Did you recode your S8? I did it to my old car, but....
...it did not seem in the posts that the S8 needed a new code.....if there is one that makes a difference, i will def. do it! please advise

Sorry - the tranny recode works on the A8 only, not the S8.
My tranny seems to shift unpredictably occasionally, but I'm 99% certain it's the result of DSP, the dynamic shift program.
DSP is supposed to "learn" your driving style and adjust the shift program accordingly -- fine ... unless you change your driving style. I drive like an 80-year old man when the motor's cold and don't revert to "normal" until the motor's fully warm. The result is that the tranny learns my normal driving style and then shifts too aggressively the next morning. I've gotten used to this, but I'd sure like to be able to use VAG-COM to disable DSP and have the tranny just respond to my right foot the same way every time.
And ... Congratulations on your S8 and welcome to the forum!

My solution is simple
I just always drive the car in tip mode. When warming up, I leave the car in a gear where it'll rev between 2k and 3k RPM (I have a 3 mile drive through a 35mph zone in my development before I hit the highway).
After a couple weeks, I got so used to driving in tip mode, I now can't stand letting the car decide when to shift (it's always wrong, it seems!) Plus I feel like I'm at least a teensy bit more involved in the driving process, having to decide which gear is best and when is the best time to shift.
