Default Help me identify this sensor?

As I was finishing up my upper control arms I noticed this sensor doesn't have a bolt through it and is just rattling around on the transmission. The photo is from the drivers side, the green tag is on the tranny and the sensor that's not really connected is directly above mthe tranny tag. Curious what this is for, and what size bolt I need to get to re attach it. Any help would be appreciated. The photo needs to be rotated clockwise 90 degrees, sorry couldn't figure out how to do that.
Thanks,
Tony

Thanks. I'm surprised it's working at all it's really loose in there. I'm hoping the bolt is the same on my 2000 A8 parts car and will fit the 01 S8.

Default parts car

The saddest thing about the parts car is everyone who drives by it thinks it's still working because it still looks gorgeous, but 200k miles, bad tranny, and then I think the fuel pump went so it was time to just upgrade to the S8. I'm glad I kept for parts though, real handy when you need a little part when parts stores are closed or when you realize that little part costs a lot of $$$$$ at the dealer. About to steral a temperature sender off it as the one on the S8 is acting up intermittently (sp)

Default Starts then dies!

So I put the small bolt into that sensor, tightened it up and tried to head down to get an alignment. It starts but immediately dies. I tried un bolting the sensor, same thing? Ran the vag and got these engine codes
16804-Catalyst System; Bank 1

16804-Catalyst System; Bank 1
P0420-35-100 Efficiency Below Threshold- Intemittent
17978-Engine start blocked by Immobilizer
P1570-35-00
18058- Powertrain Data Bus
P1650-35-00 Missing message from instrument cluster
Readiness: 0000 0000

I reset the codes and tried starting, same thing. Checked the engine codes and the same ones pop back up.
I'm stumped, do I need to adjust that sensor either physically or with the VAG? could it be unrelated?

if the car starts and dies it is the imobilizer.
when the crankshaft postion sensor is bad it just keeps turning over.
try topping off your battery
use charger or by jumping from other car

it is possible that battery is strong enough to turn over but not enough current for imobilier circuit

when you put the key in igntion and turn it before you try to start it does the yellow imobilier key stay lit?

Default Unplugged battery

Thanks. So while I was writing that message I had it on the charger thinking maybe with it sitting for a week it was little low, though it didn't seem like it. Went out after a while and tried starting it. Same thing. Took it off the charger then took the negative off the battery for 15 seconds, then re-attached. Started right up and running fine. Now I just need to locate this G2 temperature sensor I'm having problems with (2001 S8) I know I changed one out before on my 2000 A8 but can't remember where it's located and having a hard time finding a good answer using the search...

G2 (combined with G62) is one of the 2 temp sensors in the single "double sensor" behind the engine (bank #1). It's mounted on top of the coolant pipe, directly under the throttle valve boot...4 wire connection.
G2 sends coolant temp reading to the ECU...G62 sends signal to the gauge. One can be right while the other is wrong...common failure..I've had to replace one on each of my Audi's.
