My mechanic wants to charge $2500 to replace the timing belt on my 97 A8Q, which sounds awfully expensive. He charged $1500 to do my wife's A6 30V. I can't see that there is another 1K worth of work to do the A8. What have you folks paid? I'm currently at 81K.

Sounds like he needs a new hoist for the shop or a boob job for his girlfriend.

I think the $2500 is about what dealerships charge. They generally have a much greater overhead.

What's your location? Maybe someone knows of a less pricey alternative in your area.

Good price is $425 for all parts (t-elt, v-belt, t-stat, wpump, tensioner, lever, roller, etc), and $650 for labor. Figure extra $100 for coolant and oil change while you're at it.

So $1100 or so is the right pricing from an indy. This assumes he'll allow you to buy parts to give to him to use.

I just paid $1600 which included the plugs....a bit high compaired to some other parts of the country, but as good as I could do here for a guy with references, etc.

Bruce, I ended up with a 2001 A8L with 101k for $9500 in great shape. Could not find the right S8 for the right price.
