Default I am an optimist - but leaks, leaks, leaks, - my car holds fluid like a spaghetti strainer

I have not had many problems as of late with the car, until now. Just recently I have seen a few stains under the car. I took it in to the dealer today and I have been quoted $325 to chage the trans shaft seal (don't know which, I assume there is more than one?) $525 to change two seals on a transmission plug, fluid change, and gasket replacement on the pan, and lastly $650 to change the left and right diff seal. I will go into the shop after work to see what they are talking about as I am not too familiar with these areas. With this vague description do these prices seem ballpark? Has anyone dealt with these services lately and is there anything else down there to contend with now?

Thanks much

Default $325 is quite reasonable *if* it is for the prop shaft seal. Do you do any wrenching?

If so the front left/right diff seals are not at all challenging IMO and $625 seems quite high. No comment on the $525 amount.

Default The $525 probably isn't bad, either. People regularly pay $350 - $400 for the fluid / filter only.

Sounds like my '98. In the past year and a half I've had most or all of those leaks.

We all get a little leaky with age.

I don't have the time right now or the garage space so I will be needing to have it done by others. The leaks were definitely on either side of the rear diff and at the plug at the front of the oil pan and at the front of the driveshaft where it mates to the tranny (it was partially covered by a metal shield of some sort but there was quite a bit of fluid. I got a chance to look at it at the shop. The only thing now is whether or not to use the trans fluid I bought for the last time and didn't use. That was almost two years ago - I don't know if there is a shelf lfe on the stuff. Thanks

Tranny Fluid is lifetime fluid remember ;-). No degradation sitting on the shelf - use it.

Default Lifetime once it's in the tranny, but only three years on the shelf, ...

or perhaps Audi never read the back of the bottle.

Default Did you just switch to synthetic oil? That happened to me, I chased down all the leaks...

...and its all good now. It was fairly inexpensive and easy to change my intake manifold gaskets, oil pressure sensor (worst leak ever), cam shaft cover seals, breather hoses....pay someone else to do it and your looking at some easy $$ for them.
