I used a Hayden "stacked plate" cooler, which offers multiple oil pathways and low restriction. I also added a (Ford truck) inline filter kit. This is a nice unit that is in a finned aluminum case that offers additional heat sink area as well as filtration. I plumbed as follows: the return line from the stock (in radiatior) cooler was cut and the outlet feeds the cooler. The cooler outlet feeds the inlet of the filter, and the filter outlet reconnects to the stock return line. Pretty clean, and adds some capacity as well-- she took a full 8 liters going by the standard fill procedure. There was no sludge or shavings/filings in the pan at 63K. It didn't shift poorly before, but now it shifts silky smooth. The attached photos show the install from the front/top. You can't see the filter which is under the LF mini-grille.

winter operation?
I have been thinking about doing something like this, but I've stalled because I want to add either a thermostat or a manual bypass valve and I can't make up my mind which.

I'm not really concerned (in Chicago), but in colder climes...
I might consider adding one. Perma-cool makes one that could easily be added. It opens at about 175-180 F, and it's about $40.
